Writing on the wall – Part IV – Danielle Bruckert

Till yesterday, I really did not know Danielle Bruckert  except as the author of my most favourite children’s book : “Writing On Walls”. When I started writing these lines last night,  I wanted to see more details about her to understand her better.  I was amused to see her as the brain behind my favourite website http://freekidsbooks.org/. She is a pilot by profession and a writer by hobby. That was a complete surprise for me. I read almost all the books from the site and was glad that the site has given me an opportunity to read wonderful books without spending a penny.

I had sent an email to her seeking permission to write those wonderful lines in my blog to conclude ‘Writing on Walls’ series. I did not expect to get a reply, but to my surprise I got a long mail from her within an hour and for a moment I felt that the mail is from my old friend but not from a stranger.

I admired her as an author always but now I admire her more as a mother, entrepreneur and a human being with a down to earth nature and beautiful heart. When you read the following lines which wrote in reply to my mail, I am sure you will agree with me.

“After I wrote the book, we found a wall we could dedicate to writing on, and painting on – I like your idea better, why not! We have to rent, as the city we live in does not allow buying houses, and I guess because it is temporary I’d always worried about having to repaint – but what is a can of paint or two, not much compared to the value”.

How can I not share the most inspiring lines with you all? You can read or download the book by visiting http://freekidsbooks.org/book/show/id/7. There are many more books you can view, read and download for your kids.

Writing on the Wall
(For Zehnya age 18months)
I wanted to write as much as I could,
I wanted to write for all I was able,
I wanted to write whether or not I should,
I wanted to write on the chairs and the table;
But Mum said, . Only on the paper!.
I wanted to write on the walls in the halls,
I wanted to write on the floors and the doors,
I wanted to write on the bats and the balls,
I wanted to write on mine and on yours;
But Mum said, . Only on the paper!.
I wanted to write on the bricks and the blocks,
I wanted to write on the rug and the stairs,
I wanted to write on the grandfather clocks,
I wanted to write on my teddy-bears;
But Mum said, . Only on the paper!.
I wanted to write up high in the sky,
I wanted to write way down below,
I wanted to write far away and nearby,
I wanted to write on my big toe;
But Mum said, . Only on the paper!.
I wanted to write on a thing I can send,
I wanted to write on a thing I can bend,
I wanted to write where no-one can see,
I wanted to write, because I am me!
But Mum said, . Only on the paper!.
Mum didn’t want me to write
on the walls in the halls,
Mum didn’t want me write
on the floor or the door,
Mum didn’t want me to write
on the chairs or the stairs,
Mum didn’t want me write
on the blocks or the clocks;
She wanted me to write, only on the paper!
I wanted to write on the walls, I really did;
But I knew it would make Mum sad.
I really wanted to be a good kid;
I didn’t want to be bad.
So do you know what I did?
I wrote
ONLY
on the paper.
